Aquastar was well located right on the Malecon.
Aquastar was well located right on the Malecon. Easy walking distance to lots of restaurants. Yes, it was right on the beach; but, not an area nice enough to get into the water. Too much seaweed. You had to walk to a nice beach,

Nice fishermen's village with good restaurants.
Nice fishermen's village with good restaurants. Very rustic in terms of hotels and restaurants.
The beach is clean and nice, clean water. However, it does suffer from the same problem of all beaches from Cancun up to here: lots of seawater. So cleaneless will depend how often they clean the seaweed.
Overall is a place to go once; no need to return, but glad I went.
Food cost can be expensive for what they are.

Sleepy boring town with nothing to do but relax and enjoy the sea. There are a bunch of snorkeling and diving locations if you're into that.
An excellent place to slow down and forget about the world.
A few quirks:
The nearby waterpark was closed because there was no cruise ship.
Same for the dolphin park, and by extension the entire touristy cruise port, is off-limits for 'regular' tourism according to the guard at the entrance there. So you can't get your fridge magnets and tshirts from there...
Half of the town is closed when there are no cruise ships. As if regular tourism doesn't matter or is not worth working for.
The difference with restaurants, shops and tours being offered was night and day when a cruise boat docked on Sunday.
Good stuff:
A laidback atmoshphere thorughout town. Not much annoying sales people. Some decent restaurants that have a good price/quality balance.
Other than the relaxed and fun strip of mahahual there isn't much to do. Which is great if you just want to relax and enjoy some food or drinks like we did.
And for that, our trip was too short (3 nights) but with the average hotel we had and few restaurant options that were open and not overpriced, 3 nights was just right I suppose.
The ride to Mahahual is an easy one, about 60KM from the main road, and that's the time where the world literally disappears in the background as you enter and enjoy the slow pace of Mahahual.

The best part of Mahahual other than the beaches is taking a trip with "Amigos del Mar Mahahual" to the atolon "Banco del Chinchorro", to Snorkel and or scuba dive. The company is very professional and have great equipment. The place is the biggest coral reef in the caribean has a lot of history and it is amazing. It was my first time snorkeling and I am oficially a fan and i will gladly go back there!!!
The town is very calm and friendly. There are days when cruise ships arrive and it becomes noisy but entertaining. Great choice of restaurants with a surprising offer of great cuisine for diner. Yaya, Malecon 21, or the restaurant at the 40 canones Hotel

More could be done to improve Mahahual, I visited Mahahual about 15 years ago and it was quiet, peaceful and clean. I was quite disappointed in how run down it had become; it was idyllic and not crazy like Playa Del Carmen and Cancun so I wanted my husband to experience lovely beaches etc, but this wasn't meant to be.

I recently had the pleasure of visiting a truly spectacular beach that left me in awe. The beach was situated near a beautiful coral reef, and the water was crystal clear and calm, making it perfect for swimming and snorkeling. The soft, white sand was incredibly inviting, and I spent many hours lounging on the beach and soaking up the sun.
One of the things that really stood out to me about this beach was how peaceful and serene it was. Unlike some of the more crowded beaches I've visited, this one felt like a true paradise, with plenty of space to relax and unwind. The lack of waves also made it perfect for families with young children or anyone who wants to enjoy the water without worrying about getting tossed around.
Another thing that impressed me was the sheer natural beauty of the area. The coral reef was home to an incredible array of marine life, including colorful fish and sea turtles, which made for an unforgettable snorkeling experience. And with the stunning scenery all around, it was easy to forget about the outside world and just enjoy the moment.
Overall, I would highly recommend this beach to anyone looking for a peaceful and picturesque getaway. It truly is a slice of paradise that I will never forget.
Amazing staff. The girls were very welcoming and made us feel at home from the first. Since we were the only ones at the hotel during that week, we got a free upgrade from a double standard room to a jr suite deluxe. The hotel is a few min from the beach but we didn't mind because the location is really quiet and beautiful (not to mention the pool, which was beyond amazing). I had to work a few days and Wi-Fi was reliable at all times. It truly was an amazing experience and we will for sure stay here in our future visits to Mahahual.
We couldn’t fault anything about this lovely hotel. The room was beautifully decorated and clean. Bathroom had a great shower. Bed was super comfortable. Breakfast was delicious and served by very friendly staff. The common areas including the swimming pool were immaculate. The location is perfect and only one block from the beach and restaurants/bars. We loved it and ended up staying another night. Will definitely stay again when we return to Mahahual.
The Hotel is right on the beach and walking distance to all the bars. Went for a fishing tournament and the hotel has everything you need for this purpose. There is a bar/restaurant on site. Being able to keep our boat right at our hotel is a super bonus. The staff is phenomenal and there to assist you for whatever you need. Will be back next year.
Beautiful place on the sea shore. The hotel offers beach service. There are great restaurants on the ground floor and around the hotel, so we didn't have to use the kitchen in our room :-). It is necessary to take a boat trip on a coral reef snorkeling trip. The hotel is at the end of a busy class of hotels and restaurants ...
The cabanas at Palmeras de Mahahual just fulfilled our expectations. The room is small, but has a comfortable bed. There is no closet or chair which makes it a bit uncomfortable. The location is at the beach, but you have to cross the street, short walk.
Perfect stay for two next to the beautiful beach in Mahahual. We really enjoyed the small Cabanas and the terrace in front of each. Bathrooms are very clean and the restaurant has good food for good price. Also enjoyed the gym very much :)
We always stay at this hotel when we visit Mahahual 1-2x/year. We love everything about it! Wonderful staff, sparkling clean, beautiful rooms and pool and courtyard, nice little attached restaurant, and the best location. We’ll be back!
The place is comfortable, clean, with a private beach, spa services, and friendly staff. We had a magnificent stay. The restaurant at the hotel is outstanding with delicious food, reasonable prices and attentive and friendly staff
Everything was perfect, sea view grom the room, nice beach. In the hotel you can get a free kayak to swim in the sea, which was very nice. You can also rent snoorkeling equipment if you need. The area od quiet and cery relaxing.
Everything is at a walking distance, really close to the Malecon and Mahaual entrance. The private beach is a plus ⛱️ with plenty of places to lay down and a restaurant front beach. (We didn't try it)
Very relaxed place, right on the beach, far from the Mahahual craziness. The staff is always available through whatsapp. Snorkeling is good in the lagoon: rays, barracuda, scorpion fish, ...
